Our colleague was invited to deliver a lecture on the laws of war and future warfare at LSE's Grimshaw Club. The Grimshaw Club is LSE's oldest student society, driving the international affairs conversation on and off campus since 1923. Khalil Dewan focused on the conceptualization of Dunlap’s Lawfare, which was a key part of his presentation. He compared it with legal realism and explored how non-state actors might interact with it using alternative codes in warfare, such as Islamic law, in relation to power imbalances.
The lecture examined how the increasing use of drones is transforming modern warfare, along with the geopolitical and legal ramifications of their deployment, and possibly considered the future trajectory of these trends. The discussion also cover the recent history of unmanned aerial vehicles in conflict, highlighting specific conflicts where they have played a significant role, and the politics surrounding drones in warfare, including their use by both states and non-state actors.
